CityTree Day 3 30/6/10
Anyway, Tami put us to work on a number of different projects, of which I participated in modge-podging a dresser with class-notes on “Cinema and Culture”, and building a path through the garden with the remnants of the Dirty Bottle Convention. It was fun feeling like a regular at CityTree as I showed the young Aussie’s the ropes around the garden and apartment.
After a few hours of work, Noa Peled, an environmental educator and photographer, came to CityTree to shoot some English footage for a short film on environmental organizations. For the occasion, Tami led an intro-course on permaculture in English. Interesting thoughts spurred from her talk: why on earth, pun intended, do we put our personal human waste INTO drinking water?! Who thought that would ever be a good idea? And then to send it all to one central location? Really, 21st century, really?
Besides contemplating the ridiculousness of the world systems that we live with today, I also pondered, from hearing Tami’s permaculture class, the idea of permaculture not only as a form of agriculture but as one of culture. What if we looked at our culture and society in the same multifaceted way that permaculture looks at ecological issues? I’m not really sure where these thoughts are going, but I’m having a very fun time thinking them.
Later in the afternoon, after making (ok, eating) the most delicious date-beet-(yup, beet)-orange-sesame-beer-carrot-balls-covered-in-roasted-cacao, I said my “lihatra’ots” and headed back to Ra’anana. What’s the best part of ending the day, you ask? I get to come back tomorrow.
